Guest House
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a
meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

An
Autobiography in Five Chapters:
Chapter 1
I
walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the
pavement. I fall in.
I
am lost….I am helpless.
It
isn’t my fault.
It
takes forever to find how to get out.
Chapter 2
I
walk down the same street. There
is a deep hole in the pavement.
I look the other way.
I
fall in again.
I
can’t believe I’m in the same place.
I
am lost….I am helpless.
But
it’s not my fault.
It
still takes a long time to find how to get out.
Chapter 3
I
walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the
pavement. I see it’s there.
I
fall in….it’s such a habit…but my eyes are open.
I
know where I am.
It’s
my fault. I know how to get out.
Chapter 4
I
walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the
pavement. I
walk around it.
Chapter 5
I walk down a different
street……………………
